What it is
About X-ray
X-ray uses a small amount of ionising radiation to produce clear images of bones and internal structures. It is the most common first-line imaging test and is used to investigate fractures, chest and lung problems, arthritis and abdominal complaints.
All United Radiology sites use modern digital detectors, which reduce radiation dose and produce sharper images than film. Reports are typically available to your referring doctor the same day.

Referral from your GP or specialist, Medicare card, and any previous imaging on disc or via My Health Record.

Loose clothing you can move out of the way. Leave watches and metal jewellery at home if you can.

On the day
What actually happens
Arrive five minutes early. You'll be out well inside the hour.
Step 01
Check in
Hand over your referral and Medicare card. No paperwork to fill in.
Step 02
The scan
Your radiographer or sonographer walks you through it as they go.
Step 03
Radiologist review
A sub-specialty radiologist reads your images and writes the report.
Step 04
Results
Sent to your doctor the same day. Book your follow-up before you leave.

Does x-ray hurt?+
The scan itself is not painful. Some positions can be uncomfortable if you have an injury — tell your radiographer or sonographer and we'll adjust.
Can I bring someone with me?+
Yes. A friend or family member is welcome in the room for support, except during a few specific studies where privacy or safety requires them to wait outside.
Will I get my results on the day?+
Your report goes to your referring doctor the same day — usually within a few hours. Please book your follow-up appointment with them to discuss.
Do I have to pay anything?+
Medicare-eligible scans are bulk-billed at every United Radiology clinic. If a service is not covered, we'll always quote the fee before you book.
Can I request a female sonographer?+
Yes — please let us know when you book and we'll roster the scan accordingly.
